1647 Family Engagement Coach - Job Description

1647 seeks a collaborative and talented Family Engagement Coach with a passion for improving public education to help advance our work in Massachusetts.  The position focuses on supporting educators and school leaders to engage families effectively.  The ideal candidate brings a successful track record as an educator, strong project management skills, coaching and training experience, and on-the-ground experience using family engagement to accelerate student learning and involve families in their children’s school life.

As we enter our fourth year of operation, 1647 will partner with at least ten urban public schools in Eastern Massachusetts to support school leaders and educators in building relationships with families, communicating with them throughout the year, and partnering with them around their children’s academic success. We are looking for an outcomes-oriented, mission-driven team player to serve as a core member of our staff.

The Family Engagement Coach position offers an incredible opportunity to work in a growing, entrepreneurial, and collaborative organization that is seeking to change the culture of how families and educators partner on behalf of students.  This position reports to our Chief of Family Engagement.


Oversee and implement our family engagement work with our school site partners.

  • Train and coach teachers and school leaders at our partner schools to implement home visits, academic partnerships, and other family engagement practices.
    • Facilitate or co-facilitate home visit, academic partnership, and other family engagement trainings and practices with teachers and school leaders
    • Lead a home visit training team by providing guidance and constructive feedback
    • Oversee coaching, observation-feedback, and debrief sessions on family engagement practices with teachers and school leaders
    • Identify teachers and school leaders at each school who excel at effectively engaging families and support them in sharing their expertise and lessons learned with others
    • Facilitate meeting and observation opportunities for teachers and school leaders from different schools to learn and share together
  • Provide school leaders and lead teachers with the guidance and support needed to enable effective implementation of home visiting, academic partnerships, and other family engagement practices on a school-wide basis.
    • Deeply understand the barriers teachers and school leaders face to engage families and generate creative solutions to help them overcome those barriers

    • Guide school leaders and lead teachers to plan, implement, and monitor home visits, academic partnerships, and other family engagement practices in a high quality, timely fashion with purposeful deliverables

    • Provide coaching with concrete feedback, suggestions, and support to help school leaders and lead teachers maximize their schools’ family engagement work

    • Advise and support school leaders and lead teachers on planning and improving family engagement training and practice through observation-feedback, debrief sessions with teachers, families, and school staff

    • Use data and program rubrics to determine areas of strength and growth for partner schools and use this information to facilitate goal-setting and action-planning with school leaders and lead teachers

Help shape and drive our family engagement work

  • Contribute to landscape analysis and research of the existing family engagement practices of potential school and school district partners

  • Help develop and edit training materials for home visiting, academic partnerships, and other family engagement practices

  • Design tools to support our partner schools’ family engagement capacity building

  • Create written and visual communication materials to convey key messages regarding family engagement best practices

  • Coordinate, participate in, and document ongoing learning within the family engagement field

Contribute to the organizational growth of 1647

  • Contribute to the development of short-term and long-term strategic plans

  • Support Co-Founders on major organizational projects, as needed

  • Support recruitment and roll out of new partnerships

  • Perform other duties and special projects, as assigned

Education and Experience

  • 4+ years’ experience in teaching, with leadership or instructional coaching experience and/or 4+ years’ experience in a school or community-based setting working directly with students and families

  • Experience in program or curriculum design and partner management

  • Experience using family engagement to improve student outcomes required, with experience in parent-teacher home visitspreferred

  • Experience working with immigrant families and students, ELL students, and/or Special Education students and their families preferred

  • Bilingual skills preferred

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree preferred
